Out-of-town and mobile businesses

Is your main office based outside of city limits, but you serve Penticton customers? Or maybe your enterprise is so mobile that having a location would hold you back?

We have 2 different categories of business licences that help serve mobile businesses:

  • Inter-community business licence: This option is for you if you have an office/location in another community and a home-city business licence. The “inter-community business licence” will allow you to do business in the 19 municipalities* in the program, on top of your home municipality licence.
  • No location: If your mobile business is from outside the City of Penticton limits and you don't have an office/location registered in your home municipality, then the “no location” licence is for you.

Want to get started? Visit OneStop and apply for a licence, register your business and obtain a B.C. business number. Once we receive your application from OneStop, a City business licence representative will contact you to find out more about what your plans are and starting the process.

Home-based business

Your business operates from home because it makes sense for your enterprise. Or maybe you are considering setting up an office or other business in a residential area.

Many business owners want to start their venture in a dedicated space, but may not need a commercial building, and the Home-based Business Licence gives you that flexibility.

Home-based Business Licence holders operate an occupation or profession in a residence. According to zoning [PDF - 5.2 MB], they can operate out of a building that primarily is residential, with a secondary use of occupation. We have two types of home occupations you can apply for: a Minor Home Occupation or a Major Home Occupation business licence.

There are some special exceptions to Home-Based Business Licences:

There are 3 kinds:

    • B&B with one room: This is permitted in residential areas in the City, as it's considered a Minor Home Occupation. More Info [PDF - 82 KB].
    • B&B with 2 to 3 rooms: These B&Bs are allowed in certain zones. Check with the Planning Department to see if you're in the right zone, or ask us about applying for a site-specific zoning. More Info [PDF - 82 KB]
    • B&B with 4 rooms: These B&Bs are allowed in certain zones, and cannot be converted into something that looks different than a home (paved parking lots, etc.). Check with the Planning Department to see if you're in the right zone, or ask us about applying for a site-specific zoning. More Info [PDF - 82 KB]
