Checklist

  • Request a business name and register it through the OneStop Business Registry or visit the Service BC office located at 40 Calgary Avenue
  • Register with Canada Revenue Services (GST number) and WorkSafe BC.
  • Verify the address where you wish to set up your new business and confirm that the zoning and parking provided on the site are suitable for your business.
  • Acquire a Building / Plumbing Permit if you're planning to build or make renovations. Building and Plumbing Permits can be obtained at the Building Department counter at City Hall. The process of obtaining a permit is as follows:
    • Bring your completed building permit application, drawings, and if applicable, agency agreement and schedules to City Hall.
    • Staff will review the application for completeness, will either take it in or request more information.
    • Once the application is in, the Building Permit may take 4-6 weeks to process
  • Acquire gas and electrical permits if building or renovation plans will require gas and electrical alterations. Gas Permits may be obtained through BC Safety Authority located at 1101 Main Street. You may also contact them at: Electrical - 250.487.4453 or Gas - 250.487.4488.
  • You'll need a sign permit before you can erect any signs at your address. A sign permit can be obtained at the Building Department counter at City Hall.
  • Inspections are conducted over the course of construction. Once building and renovations are completed, a final inspection is required. You should book inspections 24 hours in advance. Once your building passes inspections, you will receive an occupancy permit.
  • Now you will need to get a business licence to operate your business. You cannot run a business without a business licence.

For most businesses, completing these tasks will have you set up and ready to open your doors.
