Inter-Community Business Licenses
A program has been created to make obtaining a Business Licence easier and less costly for businesses that do work, conduct business or provide services in more than one community in the Provincial Region. This will save a business from obtaining a separate Business Licence from each community in which that business wishes to do business or provide services.
In partnership with the Provincial Ministry of Small Business and Revenue, communities in the Province have created an Inter-Community Business Licence Program for these regions. With this program a business will only have to obtain one additional Business Licence (Inter-Community Business Licence) to do business, work or provide services in all of the other participating communities. A brief description of the program is provided below.
What is an Inter-Community Business?
An Inter-Community business is a business that performs a service in more than one of the participating communities and is mobile; which means they provide services or do their business by moving from client to client and the business does not have a storefront or location other than in their home or Principal Municipality. The Principal Municipality is the community in which the business has its location, shop, office or home base. A mobile business includes contractors of all types such as trades people, landscaping services, janitorial services, pests control etc. It also includes other types of mobile service providers such as massage therapists, mechanics, photographers, hair dresser etc. A mobile business does not include businesses selling goods and or services from a fixed or semi-fixed location such as a fruit stand/truck, mobile stores, flea markets, horse drawn carriage rides, carnivals, concessions stands or trade shows.
Who is eligible for an Inter-Community Business Licence?
All mobile businesses are eligible for an Inter-Community Business Licence with the exception of certain types of businesses. The following business types are not eligible for an Inter-Community Business Licence: escort agencies and vehicles for hire such as taxis, limousines and busses. These business types are required to obtain a separate business licence for each municipality in which they operate.
Basic provisions of the Inter-Community Business Licence Program
- Businesses that are not mobile businesses or are not eligible for an Inter-Community Business Licence must obtain a Business Licence in each municipality in which they do business, operate or provide services to clients.
- A business that is eligible for an Inter-Community Business Licence must still obtain a regular Business Licence (Principal Business Licence) from the municipality in which they are located (Principal Municipality).
- In addition to the Principal Business Licence a mobile business may obtain one additional Inter-Community Business Licence to do business in all of the other participating municipalities. To obtain an Inter-Community Business Licence the business must apply for the Inter-Community Business Licence at their Principal Municipality.
- An eligible non-resident business or a business that does not have a business location in ANY of the participating municipalities, may obtain a standard Business Licence from any of the participating municipalities and then may apply for a Inter-Community Business Licence.
- The cost of an Inter-Community Business Licence is $150.00.
- An Inter-Community Business Licence is valid for the same term as the standard Business Licence issued from the principal municipality.
- A business holding an Inter-Community Business Licence must comply with all of the bylaws and regulations of each municipality in which they operate.
What do I do to renew my business licence if my business is not located in Penticton and I want to do business in Penticton?
Please see the municipality where you have your Principal Business Licence.
What do I do if my business is not located within Penticton or any of the other participating municipalities? (non-resident business)
Non-resident businesses must choose a participating municipality and obtain a Principal Business Licence from that municipality; this now becomes their Principal Municipality. The business may then apply at their Principal Municipality for an Inter-Community Business Licence.
For further information please contact the Principal Municipality for your business.
