Former mayor Ivan C. Messmer passes
March 9, 2015
Condolences go to family and friends of Ivan C. Messmer, the former Mayor of the City of Penticton, who passed away.
Mr. Messmer was first elected to Penticton Council in 1975, and became mayor in 1980. He formerly ran a construction business and believed that Penticton's future lay in bringing new business to the city to broaden the tax base and encourage secondary businesses. Re-elected three times, Messmer resigned his Council seat in 1986 to enter provincial politics as an MLA for the Social Credit party. He quickly advanced to a cabinet position and ended his tenure in government as Solicitor-General. Messmer remained active in the community following his career in politics.
“Ivan Messmer was highly regarded in Penticton and the region. His service to the community did not stop with government office; he was generous with his time, devoting even more energy in retirement to bettering the community through volunteerism. On behalf of City Council, condolences go to his family and many friends. He will be missed,” said Mayor Andrew Jakubeit.Go to Top
