 Auxiliary Fire Fighters

The Penticton Fire Department is a composite department. Our Auxiliary Fire Fighters assist our career Fire Fighters at major incidents.  This can include structure fires, grass and urban/interface fires and other emergency incidents such as flooding and natural gas pipe line breaks.  Auxiliary also assist with community fire and life safety programs.

The goal is to maintain 40 active Auxiliary Fire Fighters.  Recruitment drives are usually held once a year to encourage Penticton residents to apply for the Auxiliary positions.

Being an Auxiliary is a great way to be involved in the community, learn fire fighting, first aid and emergency skills, keep physically fit and to enjoy the camaraderie of being actively involved in the fire service.

Auxiliary Drill Nights are held on Wednesday evenings three times a month.  Auxiliary Fire Fighters carry pagers to alert them to day time and night time emergencies. Auxiliaries get paid for attending drill nights and for call outs to assist with day or evening emergencies.

Auxiliary Fire Fighters with a minimum of six months of service can apply for the Live-In program.  Live-Ins are assigned to one of our stations and commit to living at the fire hall.  It is an excellent way to gain knowledge and experience in a variety of emergency incidents.  The Live-In Auxiliary assist the career Fire Fighters with day time and night time emergencies.

Climbing the 75 foot aerial ladder on the fire truck

Aerial Ladder Climb

Not Timed

Wearing full turn out gear with SCBA, you must climb the aerial ladder (which is extended and unsupported) to a height of 70 feet and 70 degrees, touch the top rung and then return to the bottom.  Safety belt and safety rope will be worn for this event.

This event simulates manning ladder nozzle and tests ability to function in situations involving heights.

Hose Carry

Timed

You will lift and carry over your shoulder a 21/2" hose (folded and taped) weighing approximately 70lbs. Up to the fifth floor of a tower, and set the weight down.  Return back to the stating point, pick up the second bundle of folded hose, carrying the hose over your shoulder back up to the fifth floor.  You can take one or two steps at a time when going up the stairs but you must hit every stair on the way down.  time will start when you cross the start line, which is located twenty-five feet from the training tower, and the time will stop when the second bundle of folded hose is on the fifth floor.  You will be required to wear full turnout gear, helmet and SCBA for this event.

This event simulates a fire fighter carrying hose up a high rise building.

Ladder Walk

Not Timed

Wearing full turn out gear and SCBA you will without stopping or touching the ground, walk on every rung of the ladder and then back to the starting position.  This ladder will be parallel to the ground, one foot high and 20 feet in length.

This event simulates an attic search for fire extension, which requires walking across ceiling joists.

Rope Pull

Timed

In a hand over hand manner you will hoist and lower a rolled 2 1/2" hose to the top of the third floor training tower ( aprox. weight 70lbs).  You will be in full turnout gear, SCBA and gloves.  Time will start when the hose comes off the ground.  You must pull the rope all the way up until the knot on the rope hits the single pulley, and then you will lower the hose back to the ground.  As soon as the hose touches the ground, you must again raise the hose to the top of the tower and then lower it down to the floor.  The time will stop when the hose hits the floor.  Dropping the hose or letting the rope slip through the hands is not allowed and will result in redoing the evolution.

This event simulates raising and lowering fire equipment during emergencies.

Hose Drag

Timed

There will be 150 feet of 2 1/2" hose fully extended, attached to a fire truck and charged with water, static pressure on this line will be no less than 80 lbs. and no greater than 100lbs.  Wearing full gear including a SCBA, you will start at the fire truck and walk to the end of the 21/2" hose with the nozzle attached to the end, drag the hose by the nozzle back across the start line.  Nozzle must be laid down and not dropped.  Time will start on the word GO and stop when the nozzle is laid on the ground.

This exercise simulates dragging a charged working line at a large fire from position to position.

Ladder Lift

Wearing full turnout gear and a SCBA you will remove a fourteen foot roof ladder from the fire truck and place the ladder on the ground.  The ladder is then returned to the exact position where it was taken off the fire truck.
