Penticton Safety Village

The Penticton Safety Village is a wonderful place for children to learn and practice safety skills.  Since 1983 a dedicated group of volunteers with support from the City of Penticton and a number of local organizations have operated the Safety Village.  It is located at 490 Edmonton Avenue just west of Government Street.

Schools and preschools from throughout the Okanagan plan field trips to the Safety Village.  May and June are the busiest months with more than 1500 children participating in the safety programs.

These programs include:

  • Fire Safety with Penticton Fire & Rescue
The interactive program at the Fire Safety House provides smoke alarm information and practice in home fire escape skills.
  • Bicycle and Helmet Safety
Children learn how to adjust and wear their bicycle helmets properly.  Children learn about street safety, reading traffic signs and using traffic lights.  The Safety Village has a number of bicycles of different sizes or children bring their own bikes to ride on the streets of the Safety Village.  Safety Village Staff, teachers and parents help the children to practice their safe bike riding skills.  Helmets are required at the Safety Village.
  • Pedestrian Safety
As soon as visitors arrive at the Safety Village they are reminded of how important it is to walk  safely and to use care when crossing streets and intersections.  Children and parents practice at the Safety Village so that when they are out on "real" streets they will know just what to do!
