Downloads
You do not require an FTP program to download most files available from www.penticton.ca. You may simply use a web browser such as Firefox or Internet Explorer.
When downloading a file, please choose "Save" to save it to your computer before opening. (If you try to open a 50MB document over the internet... well, that's a bad idea)
Browsing Directories
In addition to specific file download links on many of our pages, we also have "directory browsing" turned on for several web folders including:
Uploads
NOTE: Files for upload should first be zipped. (select file(s), right-click and choose Send To... Compressed Folder) You can make a .zip with just one file or add many files to the same .zip bundle. Files not zipped may fail to download or (worse) actually try to open over the internet. This can cause you a real problem if the file is huge.
1. Uploads by City Staff
File sizes up to 30MB
City Staff have access to the Contribute program or to "upload pages" for their department (login via the Intranet). Ask the I.T. Dept if you require details. Although the maximum single upload limit on the upload-admin web pages is approx. 30MB, you can repeatedly use an upload-admin page to upload many smaller files.
Besides the department-specific upload sections, any City Staff can use the following general folders:
- The /files folder is unsecured and for large, longer-term general public downloads.
- The /transfers folder is password-protected and for large temporary file transfers.
File sizes over 30MB
If you must upload a file larger than 30MB, you will need to an FTP Program... (File Transfer Protocol) Programs are well known Internet programs used to facilitate the transfer of large files across the net. If you do not yet have an FTP program, there are many available. We recommend the freeware program listed below:
You will require our current FTP hostname/username/password settings to access the /files or /transfers folders. These settings can be found on the Intranet in the Information Technology Department How-To... section. Files left longer than 2 weeks in the /transfers folder will be deleted without notice.
2. Uploads by Clients - for City Staff pick-up
The www.penticton.ca/transfers folder exists for temporary file transfers. You must contact City Staff for access information to send an upload. When your upload is complete, please confirm this to the department/staff person it is for. Files left longer than 2 weeks in the /transfers folder will be deleted without notice.
File sizes up to 30MB
City Staff can provide you with a username/password to access the upload page for the /transfers folder. Although the maximum single upload limit is approx. 30MB, you can repeatedly use the upload page to upload many files smaller than 30MB each.
