Volunteering

Volunteering for Recreation Penticton:

Due to renovations, the Penticton Community Centre will be closed to the public March 22, 2010 through to spring of 2011.

The Community Centre volunteer program is suspended during this time. Please contact us for volunteer opportunites when the centre re-opens in the spring of 2011.

Volunteer Opportunities

The Recreation and Culture departments can benefit from your involvement.  We are always looking for enthusiastic, dedicated and responsible volunteers 16 years and older to help as or with:

  • Customer Service
  • Program Assistants (tots n' tykes/children/adult programs)
  • Special Events and Projects
  • Theatre Ushers
  • REACT (aquatic rehabilitation) program assistants

Other Volunteer Opportunities within Parks and Culture:

  • Adopt a Park (call 250-490-2454 for details)

Volunteering is Service

Ellen volunteers a couple of days per week in our pool control room.  Customer Service volunteers help our office staff control admission, greet participants and provide information about our facilities and services.

Volunteering is Social

Joy, Joyce and Bob enjoying themselves at the 2009 Volunteer Recognition Ceremony.  Joy volunteers with the "Craft Ladies", a group of dedicated volunteers who prepare crafts for special events and opportunities; Joyce assists participants in the REACT programs and Bob provides customer service to the fitness room participants.

Benefits of Volunteering

To show appreciation for your valuable time and effort, you may accumulate volunteer hours to use towards a drop in time or activity.  Redeem your hours for:

  • 1 hour = Drop in session - hours can be redeemed for a complimentary pass to one drop-in session (swimming, fitness room or skating)
  • 2 hours = Fitness classes (aquafit or land fit) - Hours can be redeemed for a complimentary pass to a fitness program or drop in class.
  • 2 hours = 1 hour Registered Program - Hours can be redeemed for registration into recreation or aquatic programs on a 2:1 ratio.  For example, a 5 hour craft class would require 10 volunteer hours for free registration.  Some program are not eligible for exchange.

Theatre Volunteers Only:

  • 10 hours of theatre ushering can be redeemed for upcoming Cleland Theatre performances.  Limited seating available.

Special Events

Halloween 'Pumpkin Patch Carnival" and Santa's Hide-away Craft Workshop

You are welcome to call and leave your name to assist with this exciting Halloween event. The Pumpkin Patch Carnival takes place near the end of October and Santa's Craft early December.

Volunteering is Community

Featured right, it takes approximately 100 volunteers for our Pumpking Patch Carnival and Santa's Hide-away Craft Workshop to be a success.

Volunteering is Sharing

Danielle connects with participants in a tots n' tykes program.  What better opportunity than to share a smile.

How Do I Become A Volunteer?

  • Pick up a copy of the volunteer information brochure at the Community centre;
  • Attend a volunteer orientation to discover the opportunities available;
  • Attend an interview with the volunteer coordinator.  At your individual interview, you will be asked to complete a RCMP Criminal Records Check.  There is no charge for this procedure.  You will need to take the form, in person to the RCMP station with your identification.  They will return the form to our office.

For further information on Recreation Penticton's Volunteer Program and the various volunteer opportunities, please call the Coordinator of Volunteers at 250-490-2423.
