Penticton Community Centre donations

There are many ways to make a lasting legacy in the community, including at the Penticton Community Centre.

The City of Penticton Recreation Department has just put the finishing touches on a new outdoor patio that enhances the comfort and experience of pool patrons with a relaxing outdoor space in the sun. The project was possible through a donation from a long-time pool patron.

“The pool patio project was completely funded by our patron and Penticton Community Centre friend, Maureen Sewell. She found pleasure in supporting community centre programs and offerings with donations that allowed for equipment purchases and amenity additions,” said Chuck Loewen, General Manager of Recreation. “Maureen will be missed, but her support lives on in those who benefit from her kindness and generosity.”

Over the years, bequeathed donations have assisted the Penticton Community Centre to make a variety of additions: toys and play equipment for Gymboree, which keeps young children active; support for programs designed for special needs individuals; equipment for pool exercises; pedometers to help with walking programs for school-aged children.

Many people have supported City of Penticton initiatives in the past. The Parks Department Gifting Program has been in existence for many years, and affords individuals, organizations and service groups to make donations toward park and public space improvements. Commemorative plaques dedicating the donated item are included in the donation fees.

The program has proven extremely popular, with nearly 300 benches and picnic tables donated in the past 15 years. The department is currently soliciting donations for items like trees, bike racks, gazebos and more, as well as working alongside the South Okanagan Children's Charity to construct the community's first natural playground, Discovery Park at Skaha Lake.
