About this Program
The City of Penticton is making “Slow Down” devices available to residents to help promote awareness of residential roadway safety and to remind motorists to drive cautiously through neighbourhoods. The program is part of the City’s Friendly Streets initiative, intended to help reduce speed and increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists. There are a limited number of devices available.
The signs will be handed out, while supplies last, for residents to display in their neighbourhood at their pre-approved location. The Slow Down device can be used at any time in its approved location between March 16 and November 30, but must be removed between December 1 and March 15 to ensure it does not impede winter maintenance requirements. During this winter period, it can be deployed to a pre-approved boulevard or public property location.
Placement
- Residential streets only, ideally near an intersection for maximum visibility.
- Public property or boulevard (between the curb or the edge of the roadway and the property line).
Requirements
- Must not obstruct sight lines for pedestrians, cyclists or drivers.
- Must not be placed on sidewalks.
- If placed on the roadway, only in the pre-approved designated location.
- Devices must be removed from pre-approved road locations between December 1 and March 15.
- Not within 3 metres of a fire hydrant.
- Not in a drainage ditch or swale.
- Display as supplied without modification or illumination.
- Devices must be kept in good condition and inspected weekly.
