About Bugaboo University
Bugaboo University is your community early learning centre for 3 to 5-year-olds, where children come to learn and explore through play and meaningful interactions.
Create. Explore. Play.
Bugaboo University follows an emergent style curriculum where your child's natural interest are followed and extended through playful experiences and experiments, allowing them to learn from the process and not the end product.
The Bugaboo University campus is located in the heart of the City of Penticton, at the Penticton Community Centre. A brand new, modern 1100 square-foot learning lab has been designed as the epicentre of campus life. We provide a safe, rich learning environment where our play-based approach encourages children to construct their own knowledge and develop into unique individuals.
Children learn as a result of their own doing, through relationships, actions and exploration. Bugaboo University follows the theory of emergent curriculum, where your child's own interest in their learning is fostered and developed. We will expand on one subject through discussion, experiments and play and watch it connect and grow into a new idea for the following month to come. Our teachers are research partners with your child, seeking answers to questions and supporting their investigation by facilitating activities that they can learn from through their play. Bugaboo University offers the materials, opportunity, support and environment to inspire your child.
With every topic that is explored throughout the year, your child will be learning through their play. Achieving goals set for their social, emotional, cognitive, physical and creative development. Activities that are facilitated will involve math, science, early literacy, art exploration, and fine and gross motor development.
We understand that taking the first steps to your child's independent learning can sometimes be a difficult transition for both parent and child. With open communication between teacher, parent and child, together we will create a nurturing, open-ended learning environment.
Mission Statement
At Bugaboo University we aim to further develop your child's sense of self, stimulate their imagination and foster a love for life-long learning.
Our Philosophy
Bugaboo University offers a hands-on approach to learning, using the theory of emergent curriculum. This unique learning system brings teachers, parents and student together to create an environment where everyone contributes to your child's education.
Cognitive Expression is Boundless
Our learning system works to unite and develop all of your child's cognitive expressions; innovation, construction, fantasy, art, music, dance, building, writing, talking, science, body and soul. The result helps children to build their knowledge and understanding of the world around them. The child's community and environment are vital to their development.
Your Child is a Little Researcher
The learning system supports your child to construct their own intelligence from direct interaction with their environment and social interaction. In partnership with the teachers, your child will learn and discover answers through hands-on experiences, experiments and external resources.
Learning is a Collaborative Progression
The emergent curriculum allows the teachers to follow your child's lead and base the curriculum on their interests. Teachers ask questions and use each child's ideas and theories to guide the areas of exploration.
The Power of Wonder
We encourage your child to explore their own unique and individual interest by investigating a subject that is meaningful to them. This promotes a positive attitude toward life-long learning.

Please note: the City of Penticton is exploring ways to expand child care options available in Penticton and Bugaboo University has been identified as a space of interest. We have been working with a partner organization, YMCA of Southern Interior BC, to develop a plan to increase licensed childcare spaces available at the Community Centre site. We will be submitting a grant application to the Province of BC shortly and expect to receive notification of the result in the April 2023. If we are successful with funding, we expect to begin construction on the new facility in January 2024. With this, Bugaboo University will only be offering a Fall Semester (September to December 2023) for the upcoming school year.
