City of Penticton’s Virtual Canada Day a success

News Release

The City of Penticton’s Virtual Canada Day event on July 1, 2020 was a success, according to viewership numbers and reviews.

“I am very pleased that we were able to provide celebrations for our residents during the present circumstances,” stated Penticton Mayor, John Vassilaki. “It was wonderful to see our local talent and representatives take part. It will undoubtedly be a Canada Day that won’t be soon forgotten in Penticton.”

The virtual production featured local musicians Aidan & Mandy, Beamer Wigley and Tavis Weir, as well as entertainment from ETHOS Parkour & Movement, DancePL3Y instructor Ashley Dias, and magician Leif David. The show interspersed the entertainment videos with cameo appearances from local celebrities, including Penticton Vees’ mascot, Harvee, and some Vees players, as well as video messages from local politicians and community leaders. Local EZ Rock radio host, Allan Gee, emceed the show.

Residents may have even spotted themselves in the final community-powered version of O’ Canada, which featured photos and video submissions from across Penticton and RDOS communities.

The production has had nearly 6,000 views on Facebook to date, and continues to attract viewers who may have missed the live stream. The complete Virtual Canada Day show can be viewed online on the City’s Facebook page.

The City partnered with the South Okanagan Event Centre and Regional District of Okanagan Similkameen to create this production, with financial support from Heritage Canada.
