The City is taking steps to improve safety around schools and playgrounds. The purpose of the Safe Routes to School program is to create a safe environment for students to walk, wheel and roll to school. This process involves working in collaboration with the entire school community to identify ways to make active travel safer and easier.
Watch for these at Your School
Here are some ideas to make active travel easy and fun. These methods help build confidence for kids to travel independently, while reducing congestion at the front of the school.
KVR Elementary
Plan ahead and be aware of how traffic will be impacted with construction ongoing along Eckhardt Avenue. Note that Jermyn Avenue will be congested during peak school start and end times throughout construction. Anyone using this route should allow for extra time and be prepared for delays. Wherever possible, parents are encouraged to use Forestbrook Drive and Manitoba Street as alternative locations to park.
UPDATE: The City is working with the School District and will be installing a temporary crosswalk at Forestbrook and Manitoba in the coming weeks, with further safety improvements to be constructed by spring 2026. Click the accordion link below to learn more about the work planned for the Manitoba corridor.
Penticton Secondary
Plan ahead and consider your drop-off routes in advance, with construction underway along Eckhardt Avenue. Avoid accessing the parking lot off Eckhardt and note this parking lot is for student, staff and visitor parking only. Consider arranging drop-offs and pickups at the Penticton Public Library parking lot or from the Kiss & Go zone at 723 Main Street.
Skaha Elementary
Welcome to the new Skaha Lake Elementary! To help keep the flow of traffic moving in front of the school, we have created new 'Kiss & Go' Zones around the school. Maps and further details are available below.
