• Tips to Reduce Idling: 'Turn Your Key, Be Idle Free'

  • Carbon monoxide from car exhaust as a result from driving and idling can cause abrasions in the lungs and aggravate asthma. Children, the elderly, and people who work outside are especially at risk of health problems from this.
  • Idling for more than 10 seconds produces more carbon dioxide than restarting the engine. If a car is going to be idling for more than 60 seconds – except in traffic – it is recommended for the engine to be turned off.

   

  Tips to reduce idling

  • The best way to warm up a vehicle when it’s cold is to drive it 30 seconds after starting at a moderate speed. Also, instead of solely relying on defrost or defog, scrape the windshield to remove snow and ice.
  • Use a reflective windshield to keep interior temperatures cooler when it’s hot outside.
  • Consider taking active or public transportation instead of driving.

  • Consider going inside to order and pick up food and coffee instead of using the drive-thru, or shut off the engine if there is a very long line.
