A brief and informal summary of the latest decisions made by Penticton City Council

Sports and Recreation Needs Assessment Update 
The Sports and Rec Needs Assessment will advance to the next phase of the project after Council accepted an update that included public engagement results and a draft weighting criteria that will help shape the future of sport and rec in Penticton.

The project team will be presenting to the Parks and Recreation Advisory Committee (PRAC) in early 2025 with a Draft Needs Assessment to be delivered later in the new year. 

2025 RDOS Fire Protection Agreement 
Council has approved the 2025 Regional District of Okanagan-Similkameen Fire Service Agreement for Electoral Area F (West Bench) for a period of 5 years (2025-2029). This agreement will allow residents in West Bench to continue to receive fire services from the Penticton Fire Department.

2025-2029 Five Year Financial Plan
Council gave final reading and adopted the 2025-2029 Five Year Financial Plan Bylaw which confirms their commitment to next year’s budget and 5-year plan which will realize more safety, housing and increased vibrancy for residents.

Community Walk in Clinic (101 – 3115 Skaha Lake Road) 
Council has approved a $25,000 grant to the SOS Health Care Society to cover the cost of Building Permit fees associated with opening a new walk-in clinic in Penticton. Additionally, Council directed that City staff provide information to the proponents on how to apply for a permissive tax exemption for 2026 through the permissive tax exemption program. 

2024 Q4 Capital Projects – Budget Amendments 
Council approved budget amendments to the 2024 Capital Projects Budget for the following projects: 

  • AWWTP Upgrades
  • Okanagan Lake Retaining Wall 
  • Electrical Utility Fleet Building
  • City Hall Chiller
  • SOEC Roof Top Unit Repair

Additionally, Council gave direction for staff to submit a grant application to the Canada Housing Infrastructure Fund (CHIF) for the AWWTP Upgrades.  

Bed and Breakfast (1112 Syer Road)
Homeowner has applied for a site-specific zoning amendment that will allow for a bed and breakfast home located at 1112 Syer Road.  Council gave first reading to the Bylaw and a Public Hearing will be held on January 14, 2025. 

Notice of Motion 
Council supported the Notice of Motion that establishes the creation of a Public Safety Committee in alignment with their Strategic Priority of safety and resiliency.  Staff will be back in front of Council at the January 14 meeting with a draft Terms of Reference.
