Credit Cards at City Hall Cashiers Coming Soon

News Release

Beginning in February, customers wanting to use credit cards when paying bills in-person at City Hall will have that option.

“We know that the in-person option has been something customers have been wanting to use and now that service will be available to them,” says Cassandra MacCarthy, the City’s revenue supervisor. “Customers can still pay with cash, by debit, cheque or pre-authorized payments. As there is with the on-line credit card option currently available, there will be a service charge to cover costs.”

The City has offered a credit card option, for some services, for more than 10 years through its online payment service and a surcharge has been in effect. The expansion of service to more in-person opportunities will see that surcharge continue.

The surcharge is designed to ensure fairness across the system and that those who use fee-free options are not covering the cost of those who use credit cards. The surcharge covers the costs charged to the City by credit card companies, as well as ongoing costs to deliver the service.
