Select City facilities to be closed until April 6; Public meetings cancelled

News Release

To support national, provincial and regional efforts to contain and control the spread of COVID-19, the City of Penticton is implementing the following preventative measures.

Facility closures

Beginning Tuesday, March 17, the Penticton Community Centre, Cleland Theatre, McLaren Arena, Library and Museum, along with the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre, South Okanagan Events Centre and Memorial Arena, will be closed to the public.

“This decision follows warnings from the Provincial Government to avoid mass gatherings of 50 people or more”, said City Manager, Donny van Dyk.  “We have reviewed the advice provided by senior governments concerning mass gatherings and have determined that the volume of traffic entering our facilities, combined with the difficulty of practicing the safe social distancing once inside, has created a situation whereby it’s in our community’s best interest to close these facilities until April 6.”

Prior to April 6th, the City will re-evaluate this decision to determine if these closures will remain in place or can be lifted.

While public reception areas at City Hall and the Yards Building will remain open, residents are strongly encouraged to conduct business with staff by phone.

  • For the Yards Building (Public Works), dial – 250-490-2500
  • For Recreation, dial – 250-490-2426 (extension six)
