A Yellow Warning Heat Advisory is in effect for the Okanagan Valley. A period of elevated temperatures will remain now to Thursday. Additionally, a Yellow Warning for Air Quality remain in effect for the surrounding area. Smoke is causing or expected to cause poor air quality and reduced visibility.
With the region experiencing high temperatures, the City of Penticton is extending hours at several facilities July 22 and 23 to provide cooling spaces.
The extended hours are as follows:
- Penticton Community Centre (325 Power Street) will be open between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m.
- Penticton Public Library/Museum Lobby (785 Main Street) will be open 9:30 a.m. to 10p.m.
Please note, regular services at the Penticton Community Centre will end at 8 p.m. The Penticton Public Library will close at 8:30 p.m. and the Museum will close at 5 p.m.
Bylaw enforcement and community safety officers will be on-site and carrying water for those in need. Water fill stations can be found at both these locations.
For pet owners or anyone looking for outdoor places to cool down, Gyro Park in downtown Penticton is home to a permanent public cooling station, providing mist. Here, you will also find a water fill station for people and pets.
Residents and visitors who may have questions about available resources can call 250-490-2400 or visit penticton.ca/beat-the-heat to find places to stay cool, access water, prepare for the heat or care for pets. The City has activated its Emergency Operations Centre if further response is required.
