Honouring the life and legacy of Joan Amshen Phillip, MLA and member of Penticton Indian Band

Statement

Mayor Bloomfield has issued the following statement: 

"On behalf of Penticton City Council and our community, I was saddened to learn of the passing of Joan Amshen Phillip.

“Joan was a proud member of the Penticton Indian Band whose life was defined by service, leadership and advocacy. Whether working within her community or representing people as the MLA for Vancouver-Strathcona, she was a respected voice who dedicated herself to improving the lives of others.

“Joan Phillip earned admiration throughout British Columbia for her strength, determination and willingness to stand up for what she believed in. Her contributions to Indigenous communities and public life have left a lasting impact that will be felt for generations.

“Her passing is a significant loss for the Penticton Indian Band, the Syilx Okanagan Nation and communities across British Columbia.

“On behalf of the City of Penticton, I extend sincere condolences to Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, her children, grandchildren, extended family and all those who knew and loved her.

“Our thoughts are with them during this difficult time.”
