As the Royal Canadian Legion marks its 100th anniversary, Penticton's Remembrance Day ceremony will bring the community together at one shared location for remembrance and reflection.
For the first time, residents, veterans and visitors are invited to attend a single Remembrance Day ceremony at the Veterans Park Cenotaph on Nov. 11. Those who prefer to observe indoors will be able to watch a live stream of the ceremony from the Penticton Lakeside Resort.
For many years, Remembrance Day in Penticton has been marked through both an indoor service at the Penticton Trade and Convention Centre and an outdoor ceremony at the Cenotaph. This year, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 40 has chosen to bring the community together through one outdoor ceremony, creating a single gathering place where residents can stand side by side in remembrance.
The Remembrance Day ceremony, led by Royal Canadian Legion Branch 40, begins at 10:25 a.m. at the Veterans Park Cenotaph. As part of this year's ceremony, a parade will proceed along Veterans Way, Lakeshore Drive East and Main Street before returning to the Cenotaph, where participants will join those gathered for the 11 a.m. observance and the remainder of the service.
Residents are encouraged to attend the ceremony at the Cenotaph. For those who prefer an indoor option, a free livestream will be available at the Penticton Lakeside Resort.
"As we recognize the Royal Canadian Legion's 100 years of service to veterans and communities across Canada, we are proud to support a Remembrance Day ceremony that brings our community together in one place," said Mayor Julius Bloomfield. "The Cenotaph has long been the focal point of remembrance in Penticton, and this year's ceremony creates an opportunity for residents, veterans and visitors to stand side by side in honour, reflection and gratitude."
The community should expect temporary road closures along Main Street, Lakeshore Drive, Front Street and Veterans Way during the parade.
Full ceremony details will be made available in the coming weeks on Penticton.ca. Watch the City’s social media channels for more information.
