BC Transit to introduce limit on bus passengers for physical distancing

News Release

BC Transit will begin limiting the number of Penticton passengers on each bus as of Monday, March 30 as part of its ongoing efforts to keep riders and drivers safe amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The number of passengers will be reduced by half of the current allowable seating capacity, which will add space for physical distancing. In addition, riders are asked to stand behind a red line of floor tape. Updated information will be posted within the buses.

BC Transit is deemed an essential service by the Province of BC and will continue to operate province wide. A number of safety improvements have already been made, including enhanced cleaning measures and enforcing rear-door entry – with no fares temporarily required. Front doors will only be used for accessible boarding.

“We’re grateful to BC Transit for taking these extra measures,” said Penticton Mayor, John Vassilaki. “Many people rely on the buses to get around. These include people who are stocking our shelves, providing essential services, or community members who need to pick up groceries and prescriptions. Any efforts we can take to promote physical distancing will ensure we stay safe and healthy.”
