Chemical transfer planned for Friday Dec 18 at Waste Water Treatment Plant

News Release

The City of Penticton is advising residents and businesses near the Waste Water Treatment Plant, specifically properties along Waterloo Ave, Duncan Ave W and Huth Ave, of a procedure scheduled for Friday morning, December 18, involving the transfer and removal of contaminated sodium hypochlorite (bleach).  The contamination was created following the unplanned mixing of chemicals during a recent maintenance procedure.

With support from a hazardous materials contractor, the City will remove the contaminated material for transport and off-site disposal. Continuous air monitoring at the site and around the perimeter of the operation will be conducted throughout the duration of the procedure, which the City intends to begin at 9am and complete it by early afternoon.  Work measures and controls will be implemented to ensure the procedure is conducted safely and effectively.

“Friday’s procedure carries a low risk to the public.  As an added precaution, the City will have its Emergency Operation Centre on standby to monitor developments and respond, if needed,” said General Manager of Infrastructure, Mitch Moroziuk.

Notifications are being delivered to properties in the immediate area around the Waste Water Treatment Plant. In the event that residents or businesses require additional information, please call 250-490-2515.
