The City of Penticton has rolled out a series of seasonal safety improvements along Lakeshore Drive to ensure residents and visitors feel safe and supported while enjoying one of the community’s most iconic waterfront destinations.
The Lakeshore Drive Seasonal Safety Initiative is a direct response to a recent public space safety assessment, which identified environmental and operational factors contributing to late-night safety incidents. The review found that nearly half of the violent incidents in the area occurred between 8 p.m. and 4 a.m., with a significant number involving youth and young adults.
“Lakeshore Drive is a place where people come to relax, connect and celebrate the beauty of our city,” said Julie Czeck, General Manager of Public Safety and Partnerships. “This initiative reflects our commitment to making sure everyone feels safe here—day or night. We’re investing in smart, community-focused solutions that make a meaningful difference.”
The safety-focused environmental review highlighted areas with limited visibility, inconsistent lighting, and enforcement gaps. In response, the City has already taken action:
• Enhanced RCMP and Bylaw patrols have been in place since late June, with additional overnight enforcement planned through Labour Day.
• Lighting upgrades have been implemented at Riverside Park and basketball courts, and staff are currently exploring further enhancements in key dark zones, like Loco Landing parking lot and Rotary Park.
• Beach fire pits have been closed for the season due to wildfire risk.
• Camera assessments are in progress to explore surveillance options in public spaces, with privacy protections in place.
While the City’s public safety team is leading these improvements, officials emphasize that safety is a shared responsibility. Residents, businesses and visitors all play a role in fostering a respectful and secure environment. By staying aware, reporting concerns and following local bylaws, the community can work together to ensure Lakeshore Drive remains a safe and welcoming space for everyone.
These improvements are part of a broader strategy to support a safe, livable and vibrant waterfront experience.
Staff are recommending that Council refer further enhancements to the Public Safety Advisory Committee, before returning with a comprehensive strategy to an upcoming meeting this fall.
