City services adjusting to Step 3 of BC’s Restart plan

News Release

The City of Penticton is taking steps to implement the changes to the COVID-19 restrictions announced by the Province as part of Step 3 of BC’s Restart plan and beginning July 1, 2021.

“There are a few changes that we can implement immediately and others that we will need to phase in over the next few weeks and months,” says the City’s General Manager of Finance and Administration, Jim Bauer. “We know that people are very excited and we encourage you to be patient as we begin lifting restrictions in a safe and coordinated manner.”

Staff will bring a report to Council at their meeting on July 20, 2021 to review how operations are adjusting to the reduction of Provincial health restrictions. Items such as in-person Council meetings and Public Hearings, opening facilities and increasing capacity, and expanding programming and services, will be addressed as part of this report.

In the mean time, beginning July 1, 2021, masks are not required in City facilities but continue to be recommended for all people 12 and over who are not fully vaccinated. Additionally, members of the public who are meeting with City staff are no longer required to complete health check forms in advance. Citizens who are not feeling well should continue to avoid visiting City facilities. The City also asks that residents continue to be respectful and careful in their interactions as physical distancing and building limits are relaxed.

Since the Province’s announcement, the City’s Recreation department has seen an increase in booking requests for park space and facilities. Staff are working with user groups and event organizers to address their needs and request the community’s patience as the City works toward increased usage of parks and facilities in accordance with the updated restrictions. More information about changes to Recreation services will be shared as it becomes available.

“This is exciting news for the City of Penticton and of course our businesses and citizens. I want to thank everyone for doing their part to respect the COVID-19 protocols and get their vaccines so that the reopening is becoming a reality,” says Penticton Mayor John Vassilaki. “Let’s enjoy the lifting of restrictions but remain vigilant on the orders that remain. Please remember that this will be a difficult adjustment for some and we need to continue to be kind and respectful.”
