Construction activity will increase throughout Penticton starting Monday, July 6, as multiple projects advance to upgrade essential infrastructure, including water systems, roads and pathways.
Upgrading infrastructure is vital to ensuring residents have dependable drinking water and safe, efficient transportation routes. While construction activity and temporary detours may cause inconvenience, the City appreciates the community’s understanding and cooperation.
Residents are encouraged to plan their trips in advance, stay alert to updated traffic patterns and allow for additional travel time as crews work to complete these improvements safely and as quickly as possible.
Green Avenue Construction
Work is continuing on Green Avenue to improve safety along this busy corridor, which serves two schools and a daycare. Beginning July 6, crews will move into the intersection of Green Avenue and Skaha Lake Road to complete key safety upgrades, including shorter pedestrian crossings, revised signal operations and other changes.
This intersection is currently one of the City’s highest‑collision locations (not including the highway) and has been identified as a priority for upgrades through the Safe Routes to School study in collaboration with the school community.
During this phase:
- Traffic along Skaha Lake Road will be reduced to single lanes in each direction.
- Access to Green Avenue at Skaha Lake Road will be closed, with detours in place.
- Traffic signals will be temporarily out of service.
- Minor transit detours will be in effect (visit bctransit.com for updates).
Drivers should expect delays and are encouraged to avoid the area where possible. Extra caution is advised, particularly at pedestrian crossings. This phase of work at the intersection is expected to continue for roughly six weeks, with updates to be posted at penticton.ca/greenave.
Eckhardt Avenue Construction
The Eckhardt Avenue infrastructure project is entering its next significant phase. Beginning July 6, the intersection of Eckhardt Avenue and Government Street will be fully closed for approximately two weeks to accommodate underground infrastructure work that requires large excavations. This next phase of construction will involve replacing aging watermains, upgrading the electrical infrastructure and installing new traffic signals. At this point, the western section of Eckhardt Avenue between Main Street and Gahan Avenue will reopen to the public.
The City recognizes the impact this large and complex project has on residents, businesses and those travelling through the area, and sincerely thanks everyone for their patience.
Additional work along Government Street (at Forestbrook Drive) will be coordinated to begin at the same time to reduce impacts for those travelling through the area. This construction will occur within the same detour route, minimizing overall disruption.
The remaining phase of work, from Government Street to Ontario Street, is planned for later this summer and into the fall. The overall $5.5‑million project remains on track for completion in late fall 2026 and will both enhance road safety and improve infrastructure reliability and resiliency.
