Construction soon to begin along Green Avenue

News Release

Construction to improve traffic safety along Green Avenue will begin starting the week of May 4, 2026, creating a safer connection for everyone walking, rolling and driving through the area.

Green Avenue is a high-traffic corridor that serves two schools and an on-site daycare, as well as one of the City’s top collision locations at the intersection of Skaha Lake Road. With the recent conversion of Skaha Lake Elementary, approximately 400 additional children aged five to 12 are now walking or rolling to and from school, along with families and caregivers accessing the new daycare with 80 spaces.

“We’re investing in safety upgrades in a neighbourhood where children, families and people using mobility devices are travelling every day,” says Kristen Dixon, general manager of Infrastructure. “The intersection of Green Avenue and Skaha Lake Road is a priority because of the outdated highway design, high-traffic speeds, the number of people crossing the street and its collision history.”

Infrastructure changes will be made to Green Avenue between Paris Street and Green Court, with a focus on shortening pedestrian crossings, slowing vehicle speeds and improving accessibility for all ages and abilities.

The work includes repurposing excess road space to create buffered painted mobility lanes, curb extensions and raised crossings in the school zone, as well as lane reductions through the intersection.  Parking will be maintained on the south side of Green Avenue from Skaha Lake Road to Green Court, and the intersection design will set the foundation for future transformations of the Skaha Lake Road corridor.

Construction will begin on Green Avenue, west side of Skaha Lake Road, with work adjacent to the schools to be conducted during the summer school holiday, to minimize disruption. Anyone travelling through the area should slow down and watch for signage.

This project supports the findings of the Safe Routes to School study for Skaha Elementary, as well as the City’s Transportation Master Plan, Climate Action Plan and Official Community Plan.
