With the weather warming up and summer break approaching, the City of Penticton is taking proactive measures to slow traffic in neighbourhoods where kids will be playing outdoors.
The City will be distributing a limited number of ‘Slow Down’ devices to community members to display on their residential streets. It’s part of the City’s Friendly Streets initiative, designed to create safe, vibrant spaces that build a strong sense of community and support outdoor activity.
“Playing outside is key to a healthy lifestyle, and this initiative is about encouraging kids to be active while reminding drivers to slow down and keep our streets safe for everyone,” says Kristen Dixon, general manager of infrastructure. “Residential streets bring people together – whether it’s through a street hockey game, a neighbourhood BBQ, or kids riding bikes. This is about building safer, more connected communities where people can enjoy time outdoors.”
Penticton residents are invited to apply for a device to display on their streets at a pre-approved location (restrictions apply). The deadline for submitting applications is June 20, 2025 and the Public Works team will notify successful residents once all applications have been reviewed.
