Families in Penticton can look forward to significant upgrades at Lakawanna Park, with a new and expanded playground and splash pad designed to welcome users of diverse ages and abilities.
Construction will begin soon to replace the aging play structures, originally installed in 2000, with new amenities with accessible features. In addition, the revitalized park will expand in size by roughly 630 square metres, featuring an upgraded splash pad, outdoor fitness equipment, seating areas and an improved washroom facility.
Council approved the $2 million renewal and expansion of the park in October 2025 following an extensive engagement feedback process, including on-site workshops and community surveys.
Improved accessibility will be added throughout, as well as enhanced landscaping, while the park’s mature trees will be preserved to maintain its natural character.
Work will begin later this month, with the playground anticipated to open this fall and the new splash pad ready in spring 2027.
During construction, residents will notice some temporary changes in the area:
- Construction fencing will be installed in the coming weeks to safely secure the site.
- A project storage area will be set up in the parking lot and may shift as work progresses.
- The washroom off Power Street will remain open, while the washroom within the park (east side) will be closed during construction.
- Water will be used during demolition and earthworks to help control dust.
