The City is excited to confirm a new publicly shared fleet of e-scooters and e-bikes will be available in Penticton, starting March 30, 2026. As part of the City’s ongoing commitment to clean and affordable transportation options, the local introduction of Bird Canada will offer residents and visitors an affordable and accessible mode of alternate transportation for Penticton.
For the initial launch, there will be 100 devices in the local fleet, with 75 e-scooters and 25 e-bikes located in nests (designated parking areas) throughout the community, with a higher concentration of devices found in the downtown core, near popular transit spots, at civic buildings (including the Community Centre, Penticton Library, and City Hall) and along the Lake to Lake Route. The number of devices in the community will be adjusted depending on demand, seasonality and usage patterns. Residents can also suggest a nest location through the Bird app or by contacting Bird Canada directly at any time.
“Introducing Bird devices presents an exciting opportunity for our city. We’ve learned a great deal from other municipalities that have implemented these programs, and we know the most successful approaches are tailored to each community. Our program will continue to evolve as we monitor how devices are used,” said Kristen Dixon, General Manager of Infrastructure.
In 2024, the City of Penticton officially joined the Province’s Electric Kick Scooter Pilot Project, along with several other cities. The project has been extended into a four-year program, with city participation running until 2028, when the program will be evaluated to confirm if e-scooters will be permanently legal in B.C.
“Bringing e-scooters and e-bikes into our micro-mobility program is another simple way to make sure we’re supporting ongoing sustainability efforts as we build more resilient infrastructure,” said Dave Kassian, Sustainability Supervisor. “These devices give people an easy and cost-effective way to get around without a car.”
As part of Bird Canada’s introduction to Penticton, riders are reminded to follow the rules of road. All Bird Canada e-scooters and e-bikes must stay to a maximum speed of 25 kilometers per hour, riders must be 16 years of age, and helmets are required. The City of Penticton and Bird Canada, in collaboration with the RCMP, will continue public awareness efforts focused on safe and responsible use of devices in the coming months.
