Watch for puncture vine and report sightings

Service Announcement

The City of Penticton is asking residents to watch for puncture vine, an invasive plant with sharp, spiky seed pods that can puncture shoes, bare feet, pet paws and even bicycle or vehicle tires.

Residents who spot puncture vine in a public space, park or along a roadside are encouraged to report it using the City’s online Report an Issue tool at penticton.ca/report-an-issue.

City crews have responded to numerous reports in recent weeks and have identified several infestations throughout the community, including in the industrial area. Early detection and reporting help crews remove the plant before it spreads.

Puncture vine typically grows in sandy, disturbed areas such as vacant lots, roadsides and trails. During the summer months, it produces small yellow flowers and thrives in hot, dry conditions.

More information about puncture vine, including identification tips and management practices, is available from the Okanagan and Similkameen Invasive Species Society (OASISS) at oasiss.ca.
