Work will begin next week on Manitoba Street to make significant safety improvements from Duncan Avenue to Forestbrook Drive. This will include installing a new multi-use pathway, pedestrian crossings and a raised crosswalk to connect the path to KVR Elementary.
This project will also involve upgrading underground infrastructure including replacing an aging watermain that has reached the end of its lifespan.
This work is being completed in response to neighbourhood feedback and was identified through a Safe Routes to School study, aimed at creating safer active transportation routes for people to travel to and from KVR Elementary and Penticton Secondary.
Other traffic calming measures will also be added to slow traffic through the area, including adding speed humps and traffic buttons, reinforcing posted speeds limits of 30 km/h.
Anyone passing through the area should anticipate rotating road closures on Manitoba between Duncan and Forestbrook, with access to local traffic only. Access may also be intermittent for intersecting streets.
Drivers are reminded to slow down, follow posted detours and keep a safe distance from the work site.
Pedestrians can continue to use the sidewalk on the east side of the street during construction, in order to access KVR Elementary, and the walking school bus route will be maintained.
Residents will receive 48 hours’ notice for planned service interruptions or access restrictions. Emergency access will be maintained.
Work will continue until summer and crews will be on-site Monday to Friday from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m.
