Statement from Mayor Vassilaki expressing sorrow over discovery at former Kamloops Indian Residential School

Statement

“On behalf of City Council and all residents of Penticton, I wish to express our deepest sympathies to the Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc (TteS) and surrounding communities, and our neighbours in the Penticton Indian Band, over the discovery of the remains of 215 children buried at the former Kamloops Indian Residential School. We are devastated by this news and stand with you during this time of unimaginable grief. This discovery is a tragic reminder of the devastating and ongoing impact and trauma caused by residential schools and the importance of recognizing the past and working towards reconciliation. We encourage all members of our community to reach out to our Penticton Indian Band neighbours and show our support during this incredibly difficult time. Please join us at our Council Meeting on Tuesday, June 1, at 1 p.m. where we will observe a moment of silence.”
