Mayor Bloomfield has issued the following statement regarding the City's Safe Public Places Bylaw:
“Yesterday, council gave first reading to the revised Safe Public Places Bylaw, along with two supporting enforcement bylaws. These updates aim to make our public spaces safer and more inclusive for everyone in Penticton.
“The revised bylaw introduces clear definitions and enforceable standards around public behaviour, including a new prohibition on discriminatory harassment. This change responds directly to concerns raised by South Okanagan Immigrant and Community Services, whose data and stories highlighted the real and harmful impacts of racism and discrimination in our community.
“We’ve heard from residents who feel unsafe or unwelcome in public spaces because of who they are — their race, religion, gender identity or disability. That’s not acceptable. With this bylaw, Penticton is sending a clear message: hate and harassment have no place in our parks, streets or public facilities.
“The bylaw also strengthens rules around solicitation, obstruction and public nuisances, while respecting individual rights and freedoms.
“Council referred the bylaw to the Public Safety Advisory Committee and the Accessibility Committee for their input before further readings. We look forward to their perspectives as we continue to build a city that reflects our shared values of dignity, inclusion and mutual respect.”
