Anyone travelling in the area of Eckhardt Avenue and Penticton Secondary in the coming weeks should be aware of upcoming traffic changes due to shifting road closures.
Beginning the week of Monday, Feb. 16, access to Eckhardt Avenue off Main Street will be closed, with traffic detours in place. The closure is required to allow for excavation and large equipment to upgrade water, storm and electrical infrastructure.
In addition, multiple traffic safety improvements will be installed, including a flashing crosswalk beacon at Ellis Street and continuous sidewalks and bike lanes along the corridor.
Please be aware that the businesses in the area are open as usual. Customers are advised to allow for extra time, slow down and follow the posted detours. Access to 360 Learning Academy will also be available from the high school, with a temporary pedestrian walkway in place out front.
Parents and caregivers are reminded to avoid driving to Penticton Secondary wherever possible and to consider using the ‘Kiss and Go’ zone on Main Street or the ‘Drive to Five’ location at the Penticton Library. Maps showing these locations are available on the City’s website at penticton.ca/eckhardt.
If driving to Penticton Secondary, access will only be available via Van Horne Street. Slow down, take extra caution and follow the signs, traffic flaggers and pavement markings within the school parking lot area. When leaving the school, drivers should again take extra caution, watch the signage and leave via Braid Street.
While this section of road closure is expected to continue until spring, Eckhardt Avenue will remain closed for the remainder of the 2026 school year. Any changes with closures and detours will be announced, with this overall project anticipated to be completed in fall 2026.
The City will hand out notices to homes within the immediate area. In addition, anyone seeking project updates is invited to sign up for our email list, available at penticton.ca/eckhardt.
This $5.5-million, multi-year project involves replacing aging underground infrastructure and adding traffic safety improvements to create a “complete street” upgrade that will serve residents for many years to come.
