Construction on the west end of Eckhardt Avenue East is entering its final stages, with work between Main Street and Braid Street anticipated to be complete by early July.
Once this work is finished, roads within this section – including Ellis Street – will reopen to the public as construction shifts to the eastern portion of Eckhardt Avenue.
The next significant phase will take place at the intersection of Eckhardt Avenue and Government Street, beginning July 6, 2026. This includes major upgrades to watermains, electrical and traffic signals, and will require the intersection to be fully closed for two weeks. More information, including details about traffic impacts and detours, will be shared in the coming weeks once plans are finalized.
The City recognizes that this large and complex project has been disruptive for businesses, residents, the school community and those travelling through the area, and thanks the public for their continued patience. Residents are encouraged to continue showing support for local businesses on Eckhardt Avenue, which remain open during construction.
Detours and traffic control remain in place until work is complete. Please continue to follow posted signage to help keep crews and the public safe.
The remaining phase of construction is planned later this summer and into the fall for the section of Eckhardt Avenue from Government to Ontario Street. The overall project remains on track for completion in late fall 2026.
This $5.5-million, multi-year project involves replacing aging underground infrastructure and making traffic safety improvements to create a “complete street” upgrade that will serve residents for many years to come.
