To help manage traffic and protect local roads, trucks weighing more than 10,900 kg must use designated truck routes, as outlined under section 4.16 of Traffic Bylaw No. 2025 01.
Exceptions apply. The rule does not apply to:
- Municipal or utility vehicles while they are doing their work
- Trucks carrying fruit from a farm to a packing house
- Trucks delivering goods or materials to properties that are directly accessed from that road
In short, heavy trucks are generally prohibited, unless the road is marked as a truck route or the truck falls under one of the listed exceptions. View a map of the truck routes here.
Oversize, Overload, Overweight & Restricted Route Permit
All vehicles using City of Penticton roads that exceed legal weights and dimensions require an Oversize, Overload, Overweight & Restricted Route Permit issued by the Public Works and Electrical Departments at the City Yards office located at 616 Okanagan Avenue East before the trip. This permit allows you to drive an oversize vehicle in the City of Penticton. Applicants are to contact utility companies (Telus, Rogers, Fortis) directly.

Legal dimensional sizes and weights for the City of Penticton are as per the Commercial Transport Act [RSBC 1996] Chapter 58 (originally 1979, c. 55)
The application approval timeline varies depending on the complexity of your trip and size of load.
Expected approval timeline: 2-5 business days for completion. A permit to move a very large item, such as a house, could take one to two weeks to review.
