After a decade of travelling to Penticton for vacation, Rachael Cabrera and her husband Paul decided to make their holiday spot a permanent home.
Having moved from Squamish, the couple wanted to live in a place with a similar outdoorsy vibe, where they could bike and run in their spare time. After moving here, they have since expanded their list of activities to include paddleboarding and kayaking, not to mention wine tasting.
“We’re big food, beverage and wine people, so we love to come here. We usually visited 2-3 weeks every summer,” says Rachael. “We moved here for the lifestyle, for being surrounded by farms and wineries, which is a big passion for us.”
Both Rachael and Paul are semi-retired, with backgrounds in human resources and finance, respectively. But there’s no slowing down for this couple, who have immersed themselves in learning about the wine industry, both gaining part-time jobs in local wineries, while Rachael continues to do HR consulting on the side.
“People are lovely here,” says Rachael. “It’s easy to get around. Having lived in the Lower Mainland for 25 years, I had pretty much seen and done everything – all the hiking and backcountry camping. We were ready to see and do more, get out and explore.”
