A brief and informal summary of the latest decisions made by Penticton City Council
Temporary Use Permit approved for winter shelter
Council has approved a Temporary Use Permit that will allow a temporary winter shelter to operate at 402 Warren Avenue East this year.
The approval is conditional on a safety plan being finalized. More details here.
City finances remain on track
The Third Quarter Report shows the City remains in a financially strong position and continues to make progress on its strategic initiatives.
Overall revenue has increased $1.5 million related to additional investment income, and higher sales of service revenue.
Forecasted expenses have been increased by $100,000 overall, a $1-million increase for general fund, which reflects the union contract increases, as well as higher costs for insurance. These additional costs have been offset by lower costs for RCMP staffing vacancies, as well as identified savings within budgets.
Utilities expenses have decreased $900,000 for identified projects that will not be completed this year and deferred to a future year.
In the third quarter, of the 27 strategic initiatives for this budget year, 18 initiatives are on track to be completed by year-end, four initiatives are considered delayed as reported in the first quarter, and five initiatives have been successfully completed.
DCC fee approved
Council gave the green light to increase the Development Cost charges by two per cent.
The Bylaw will now be sent to the Province for approval prior to coming back to Council for adoption at a future meeting.
Housing projects moving ahead
Council gave three readings to a site-specific zoning amendment supporting 89 dorm-style housing units on the Okanagan College campus.
The proposal would see a total of 79 bachelor units, four accessible dwelling units, three two-bedroom units and three four-bedroom units. The parking being proposed is one stall per five beds.
Council also approved the zoning amendments for two 8-unit townhouse developments and associated permits at 85 and 95 Roy Avenue.
