A brief and informal summary of the latest decisions made by Penticton City Council. 

Konanz takes leave of absence
Council approved a leave of absence for Councillor Helena Konanz who is seeking election in the upcoming federal election.

The leave, which runs from April 2 to 29, 2025 is unpaid.

As Councillor Konanz is currently the Deputy Mayor, Council has appointed Councillor Campbell Watt as the Deputy Mayor until after the federal election.
Council’s ability to operate is not impacted by the leave. 

Urban Deer
Council directed staff to come back with more information and possible management practices after hearing an update from the Province on matters related to urban deer. 

Recycle BC Contract Renewal 
Council approved the renewal of the City’s Recycle BC contract as well as the hiring of a Waste Coordinator for a term position funded by the Multi-Material BC Reserve. 

5-year renewal for PENSAR location 
Council approved the renewal of a License to Use Agreement with The Penticton and District Emergency Program Society so it may remain co-located at 251 Dawson Avenue for another 5 years. 

Nanaimo Square Safety Recommendations 
Council directed staff to further investigate opportunities to address the public safety issues of Nanaimo Square without removing the spruce tree or fountain and to use the Public Safety Advisory Committee as a sounding board. 

Safe Routes to School Update
Council received an update on the Safe Routes to School Program. Work to support this project will occur starting this summer. 

Zoning amendment for 1635 Main Street 
Council gave first reading to Zoning Amendment Bylaw No. 2025-05, a bylaw to rezone the property located at 1635 Main Street from C8 – Vehicle Service Station to C4 – General Commercial. 
A Public Hearing will be held on April 22, 2025.

More funding for community projects 
Council directed staff to reallocate the remaining funds from the Growing Communities Fund - North Gateway allocation to community projects to bring the balance allotted to the Growing Communities – Community Projects fund to $1M and that staff bring back a report proposing the use of the $1M based on the Sports and Recreation Needs Assessment results.
