Sisters in Spirit Walk to Honor Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls

News Release

The following is being sent on behalf of the organizing committee of the Sisters in Spirit Walk

The Penticton Indian Band, Ooknakane Friendship Centre, South Okanagan Similkameen Metis Association, City of Penticton, One Sky Community Resources, and Okanagan College invite the community of Penticton to join the annual Sisters in Spirit Walk this Friday.

This event aims to honour the memory of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and two-spirit individuals (MMIWG2S). The event will begin at 12 p.m. at the SS Sicamous, with the walk commencing at 1 p.m. and proceeding down Lakeshore Drive to Gyro Park.
Participants will walk alongside trees adorned with red dresses, a powerful symbol representing the lives lost to violence against Indigenous women. Sisters in Spirit is a national movement that raises awareness about the disproportionate violence faced by Indigenous women and girls in Canada.

This walk serves as a solemn reminder of those who have been lost and a call to action for justice and change. "We invite all members of the Penticton community to stand in solidarity with Indigenous families and join us for this important event," said Shauna Fox, the executive director Ooknakane Friendship Centre, “By walking together, we honor the memories of those we've lost and demand action to prevent further tragedies."

Community members are encouraged to wear red in solidarity with the cause. The event provides an opportunity for education, reflection, and community healing. Join us in taking steps towards a future where all Indigenous women and girls can live free from violence and fear.
