Love Local: Video games

Get your game on with video games and boardgames

Did you know that in Canada, 3 out of 5 people play video games? And it’s anticipated that this number has jumped even higher since the pandemic, spurring couch-bound Canadians to dust off their old consoles and start gaming again.

It’s a trend Trevor Sparreboom, owner of Game Cave Videogames and Amusements, has certainly noticed since opening his shop in downtown Penticton last October. He’s actually been collecting games for 25 years, previously selling on eBay out of his basement, until his wife jokingly commented that he should open up a store.

“We’ve been really busy,” he said. “We’re the only game store in the valley, with people coming all the way from Osoyoos to Lake Country. There isn’t another store like this – and what better timing to open a business during a pandemic?”

While that last sentence may seem ironic, there’s no doubt that the popularity of gaming has spiked during the pandemic.

“COVID-19 influenced people to pull out their old consoles and start gaming again,” said Trevor. “It’s a massive industry.”

Unlike other gaming stores, Game Cave stocks both new and second-hand games and consoles, appealing to both fanatic and nostalgic gamers. This includes everything from classic Nintendo games to retro PlayStation, Xbox and collector’s edition consoles to new Switch releases.

Their inventory is ever-changing and they take buy, sell and trade. Visit their Facebook page for further information.
