Atkinson Street Bridge to close temporarily and other Lake-to-Lake construction updates

Construction of the next leg of the Lake-to-Lake Bike Route is proceeding on schedule and is set to be completed by October. The following is a summary of major works completed, underway or coming up for each section of this leg of the route. Periodic road closures or delays may be required as construction proceeds. Please watch for on-site signage and follow the instructions of traffic control workers. 

Atkinson Street between Duncan Avenue and Industrial Avenue (June – August)
  • Work on this section completed to date includes installing a storm water management system to reduce risk of localized flooding as well as water main replacements, and concrete and paving.
  • From July to August, work in this section proceeds and will include: 
    • Enhancing lighting along the entire corridor.
    • Improving pedestrian crossings including lighting and ramps for enhanced safety.
    • Adding bike lane curbs, finishing sidewalks, adding signage. 
    • Line painting (partly completed). 
Atkinson Street Bridge (July – August)
  • The next major milestone for the project is to widen the Atkinson Street Bridge near Industrial Avenue. The bridge will close for about six weeks beginning July 18 to allow work to proceed during the fish window. Please watch for on-site signage starting next week, allow for delays and be prepared to use alternate routes. 
Atkinson Street between Industrial Avenue and Warren Avenue (July – August)
  • Work on the section between Industrial and Warren Avenues will also get underway in July beginning with milling and concrete work. 
  • Crews will then work underground and install a storm water management system to reduce the risk of localized flooding in this area.
  • Similar to previous sections, work will then move to the surface with the addition of new lighting throughout the entire corridor.
  • Improvements to pedestrian crossings including lighting and ramps for enhanced safety are also planned for this section.
  • Drivers can anticipate single-lane alternating traffic on Atkinson Street between Industrial Avenue and Warren Avenue. 
  • On-street parking on Atkinson Street is no longer permitted between Industrial Avenue and Warren Avenue. Notices have been sent to neighbours and street signage is posted on-site.
Atkinson Street between Warren Avenue and Kinney Avenue (Late July to mid-August)
  • Work on this section of the route is planned to begin late July and run until mid-August. Along Kinney to McKenzie Street, residents will see repaving, concrete work including pedestrian crossing improvements, bike lane barriers, storm water management infrastructure work, lighting upgrades, line painting and signage. 
Duncan Avenue between Fairview Road and Main Street (September)
  • Work on the section along Duncan Avenue between Fairview Road to Main Street is planned to be conducted in September and will include the signalization of the intersection at Atkinson and Duncan as well as concrete work, installing storm drain and catch basins, electricals, line painting and signage.
